Week 2 – Honoring my teammates and coaches

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

HONOR

Romans 12:10

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Week 2 – Honoring my teammates and coaches

1 Thessalonians 5:11 “So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”

Practical Application

In sports, it’s important to honor our teammates and coaches. How do we do this? One of the best ways is to encourage our teammates and show them how much we care. Hall of Fame basketball coach John Wooden said, “Seek opportunities to show you care. The smallest gestures often make the biggest difference.” Maybe it’s telling your teammate great job after a good play or maybe it’s helping your teammate up when they fall down. There are a lot of ways we can honor our teammates with small gestures. When we honor our teammates, it really does make a big difference in their lives!

Think about someone who encouraged you. Chances are they made a big difference in your life! Maybe it’s your coach who is encouraging you to try your best this year. There are many ways you can honor your coach. For example, you can come to practice with a good attitude and be ready to learn each week. You can also follow the coach’s example. Whatever you do, it’s important to be the type of player who makes everyone around you better.

What other ways can you think of to honor your teammates and coaches? Allow time for answers.

Spiritual Application

Did you know the Bible tells us to encourage one another? 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.” God knows it is important for us to encourage one another. And it’s a great way to honor one another too! In sports, we have a great opportunity to practice honoring and encouraging each other. Look around at your teammates and think about how you can honor and encourage each other this season. Ultimately, when we honor and encourage our teammates and coaches, we are playing sports in a way that brings honor and glory to God!

Challenge

Think about ways you can honor the referees and your opponents. We’ll talk more about this in future discussions!
